Pressure and losses

Examine fluid losses

The mechanism matters as much as the volume.

MPD may sit within the drilling AFE. Its evaluation can consider effects carried into later well phases.

Discuss whole-well value
Distinguish the loss mechanisms

Losses can involve natural fractures, permeable or cavernous formations, or pressure-induced fractures. Managing pressure addresses part of this picture; geology and fluid properties remain relevant.

Frame the comparison

Define the operating challenge, the alternative being considered and the records needed to compare outcomes. An AFE allocation alone does not capture every later effect, and pressure control does not establish a guaranteed economic return.

Formation interaction

Understand formation effects

Pressure exposure is one part of a connected system.

Invasion

Consider the fluid interaction

Pressure differential, mudcake and formation properties act together.

Review the mechanism

Filtrate invasion depends on the pressure differential and the resistance offered by the filter cake and formation. Exposure time and fluid properties also matter when evaluating the interaction.

Skin

Examine the near-well response

A skin interpretation needs well-specific evidence.

Review formation effects

Formation damage can reduce near-wellbore permeability. Skin represents additional near-well pressure effects and can have several causes. MPD use alone is not evidence of reduced skin.

Production

Carry the observations forward

Connect drilling records with the later well response.

Review the evidence

Reservoir quality, completion design, stimulation and operating history also shape productivity. Preserve relevant drilling and fluid observations so later interpretation can examine their contribution without assuming a production uplift.

Connected evidence

Explore each mechanism, its caveats and its supporting references.

Placement and isolation

Review cement placement

Pressure behavior matters. Bond quality needs its own evidence.

Discuss placement context
Explore managed-pressure cementing

Managed-pressure cementing can address annular pressure during placement. Published cases show applications in challenging wells, while also documenting limitations and losses in some operations. These results are project-specific.

Evaluate the resulting bond

Bond and isolation also depend on mud removal, centralization, spacer and cement properties, placement and the condition of the well. MPD during drilling does not establish the cement outcome. Use the appropriate placement records and subsequent evaluation.
